Let’s explore what February has in store for ice fishing lovers and what the upcoming warmer weather may mean for fishing adventures throughout the year!
The Ice Fishing Scene in Northern Wisconsin
In January, I was able to spend 24 hours exploring the greatest location on earth, Northern Wisconsin. Although you could hear rumblings and complaints in the local cafes about the lack of snow, there was plenty of excitement about the ice fishing prospects.
I took a trip to two of our favorite lakes to fish in the beautiful town of Lake Tomahawk (home to snowshoe baseball). The first lake was Turtle Lake, a peaceful 60 acre lake that is surrounded by state owned land except for one abandoned cabin on the west side. I walked the outskirts of the lake and found amazingly undisturbed bear prints, deer tracks and what looked like a small fox or coyote tracks. The lake was still and I wished I had the ability to drill a hole and plop a tinsel jig into our favorite bay that is full of big bass and a few large pike.
After my trip to Turtle Lake, I headed about 3 miles south to my favorite lake in Wisconsin, Tom Doyle Lake. The fresh coat of snow was blinding as I looked out from the boat launch and grabbed my cigar and folding chair to sit near the island. It was brutally cold in the middle of the lake, but the cigar kept me warm. There was a ice shanty on the outskirts of the island, no doubt fishing for a hand-sized bluegill or crappie.
For both seasoned pros and beginners, February 2025 promises to be remarkable. Expect stable ice conditions that boost the likelihood of reeling in prized catches, such as northern pike, where anglers often take home fish measuring up to 30 inches. Reports indicate that walleye catches can be as high as 50% better during this month compared to others due to the fish's winter feeding habits.
